Work on Cultural District’s Artsy Boxes to Begin
Franklin Cultural District has selected artists for its Artsy Boxes project!
Franklin is joining in the movement of creating aesthetic utility box art to share with the Franklin community. Franklin artists of all backgrounds were invited to submit their interpretation of Franklin, a vibrant supportive town with lots of historical value. Artists submitted their best ideas for uplifting works of color to fit the locations they will be featured in. Chosen artists and their projects include:
• Bridge Powers and Greyson Higgins (working together on “Love Bugs”), is focused on bugs native to Massachusetts. It has an incorporation of musical elements related to Franklin’s art and music program. The bugs are reading books to include a reference to Franklin having the first public library. The rainbows represent how Franklin is progressive and its inclusivity.
• Ren Schultz - “The Library”- is inspired by the books gifted to the Town of Franklin by Benjamin Franklin. This iconic symbol reflects the beginning of education and knowledge becoming publicly available and accessible to anyone.
• Julia Dwinell- “Pieced Together”, This puzzle is coming together to create a picture of fun and whimsical tulips. They are a representation of New England’s Spring season.
• Shilpa Addiri- “Floral Symphony” is a one stroke art collection celebrating the beauty and elegance of Franklin. It’s vibrant colors and intricate details are a unique expression of nature’s wonder and joy.
• Molly Dee- “Proserpina” is inspired by the goddess Persephone has been depicted in art through history. In celebrating her, we hope to celebrate nature and it’s seasons along with the ebb and flow of life itself.
• Jennifer Labollita - “Hummingbird’s Nectar” - with all of Franklin’s beautiful collection of birds and flowers, this piece highlights the beauty of watching a hummingbird sipping nectar.
Artwork and assignments were evaluated by the FCD committee and Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD) for the Town of Franklin. Selected artists will receive a stipend for their work on the utility boxes, which are are expected to be painted in April as weather permits. Images will be shared on the Franklin Cultural District website when they are complete.
